When toys go missing the first place we have learned to check is in the backyard. Magic and Sailor both run out the doggie dog with balls and toys. (We almost always ask them to "leave it" as they head out the door and about half the time it works.)
Neither of our girls try to hide toys in the house.....but Magic will get into these moods where she will gather toys/balls that Sailor wants and then guard them from everyone.
