sounds like you have 1st hand experience and I'm sorry you went thru that.
but here's the Update - he made it thru the night and the vets said he seemed to be doing well considering where they had to operate - and my son is on his way to see him now.....If all goes well he can probably be home by Monday or Tuesday.
