Our Yorkie is generally very good about sleeping by herself at night. She'll generally wake up around 6-7 and will start crying wanting someone to play with her or whatever. She sleeps in a crate just fine at night (we leave the door open because we know she usually has trouble holding it in at such a young age and she will start crying if she goes in her crate), but the crate is near the living room, there is a gate in front of the living room entrance so she can't actually get in. My mother will always fall asleep in the living room for about an hour with the TV on before finally retiring to bed. Sometimes the puppy will get anxious and whine if she wakes up and the living room is dark because she knows no one is in there anymore. So we will generally leave the TV on in the living room so if she does wake up momentarily, she will still think someone is in there and she'll go back to sleep.

I also hear using a clock that ticks will help too, but I've never tried it.
