I'm asking this info. because even though I don't have a puppy yet, I want to budget and be aware of all of the extra first year costs: shots, spay/neuter, puppy classes, basic obedience, toys, food, etc. While I'm on the topic, does anyone have pet insurance and if so, is it worth it?

you already seem to know quite a bit ....
why not search the site ? there's a ton of info on spay/neuter/insurance etc...then make calls in your area and price compare.
