Use a paper plate -- no styrofoam in the microwave! The only way we should use any plastic or foam in the microwave is if it has been tested and marked approved for microwave use. Too many of them have a low melting point and will leach chemicals into the air and food.
Probably not a problem if only using it to warm dog food for 7-8 seconds but we just keep a standard policy in the house -- no styrofoam in the microwave -- ever. (Newer microwaves even have that in their safety instructions -- mine did.)
To echo the answers to the OP -- definately refrigerate after opening!
