I LOVE the poochie bells and am thankful I trained Jaxon with them. He was a bit stubborn for training and still has pee pads inside for those 'just in case times'. I started out by having the bells inside and I'd ring them each time we were going out. Eventually we built a gated area off our deck and moved the bells to the patio door. Again, I would ring them each time I was putting him out and say 'Outside'. One day he just started ringing them himself so we'd say 'good boy, Outside' and let him out, then give him a treat when he came back in (we'd spy to make sure he was actually going and he's a total treat piggy). Now it's a regular thing.
The ONLY downside - sometimes he rings them when he wants attention and doesn't actually need to go out.
