My vet said it was fine for them to lick their stitches because their saliva is sterile. You just have to watch out and make sure it doesn't get red or infected. My vet recommended Neosporin if I saw it start turning red. Neutered only takes a couple of minutes. It is such a quick and easy surgery. I know when I picked Hobbs up from the vet after being neutered, he didn't even act like he had had surgery! Don't worry...he'll be fine and everything will be over with before you know it.
