Brushes don't work for me either, for that reason. I too use a comb...just a plain ole nothing-special metal comb!
It seems to work great for us. When I use a comb, I really find myself getting "in there" more with my fingers, feeling for those hidden mats....and then, it seems easier to use my fingers to hold at the base of the hair and really get in there and get those suckers out with as little pain as possible.
