It's amazing, isn't it?! The thing I love is that they've gone through the whole nail-clipping routine before and lived through it each time, so what do they think is going to happen differently this time?!

I heard that a good way to warm them up to having their paws touched is to rub their paws every time you hold them. I've heard this suggestion for puppies, so I would assume it would work in older dogs. The vet once told us to just do a few at a time and praise the dog every time they sit still. That seems a lot easier said than done, though! I helped clip my sister's beagle's nails this weekend and I swear she was close to having a heart attack! Her nails may not look like they've been clipped, but my mom and I have the scratches to prove it!
