Ultrasounds are done in early pregnancy usually from 21-35 days from the first breeding. This is done to confirm pregnancy, they could try counting but not very reliable since everyone is moving.

X-rays are usually done past day 45 when the bones are calcified. This is done to know how many puppies to expect (When to called it a night) and to see if there are any big one to be concerned about. Counting of spines (or heads) is done here and can still be off by 1 or 2 or more. They could be hiding behind eachother or up in the rib cage. HTH.
