My vet said that if a pup is being put under for any reason - being spayed or neutered, for instance -- that's a good time to get them microchipped.

But - she said she certainly would never put a dog to sleep just to microchip it. She said that she has done it so often that it's over with before the dog even knows it's going to be done. And - they usually don't even complain - plus whatever pain it might cause lasts no more than a second or two. And, she said, this small amount of discomfort certainly outweighs the risks of putting any animal to sleep.

As far as feeling the microchip -- I am sure they are not all placed exactly the same...some are probably closer to the surface than others - some dogs are fatter and have larger areas for placement of these chips.... I would think that the smaller or thinner the dog - the more apt you are to feel the chips. And, this, in itself shouldn't be a problem.
