SEEK a vet ASAP. Sarcoptic Mange is contagious to your other animals as well as yourself (called Scabbies for humans). They will give him/her Ivermectin and possibly antibiotics if the irritation of the skin is bad. Also, they may prescribe a shampoo to ease the itching for the poor dog.

Our dogs caught the mange when I was younger, my dad and brother used yellow sulfur to cure it. They put about 4 Tblsp of sulfur in each of their bowls and mixed 2 cups of dogfood with it. Didn't take long and the dredded stuff was gone...

I heard you can use neem oil in shampoo to kill the mites that cause mange ....good for the skin too
Neem oil should be available from herbal suppliers. It is not supposed to be toxic to animals You may even be able to buy bar soaps with neem oil?

I found a lab x that has mange....She is about 85% cured.Heres what I am doing now.
I went to the feed store got some ivomec (Bovine)same as what the vet will give ivermectin.I give her .1cc a week injected into her treat.1x a week for 4 weeks I also picked up antibotic and do the same with treat daily.I put her on dog food Natural Balance Venison and brown rice formula. I also made her a shampoo that is Baby Castille soap(Dr Bronners) I added NEEM oil 10 drops its antiparasitic antifungal, fleas hate it and teatree 5 drops, lavendar heals the skin and some ground calendula leaves. After her bath she gets a organic apple cider vinegar rinse. She gets a bath every 10 days. Her hair is growing back, she no longer stinks, she also had a yeast infection in her ears that I take olive oil and neem mixed and rub her ears with. The makeup remover pads work great. then I drop 2 drops in her ear everyother day. When we found her you needed a clothes pin to pinch your nose she stunk so bad. I believe sha also had the yeast on her body as well because of all the sores she had.(secondary infection) I would say now she is a papered pooch. I feed her I scrambled egg daily mixed with her food, to that I add ground flax seed and fish oil. When I was teen my dog Squeaky died from using the vets dip. I won't go to the vet for this, Shots yes, but mange no.Its all relative to diet and immune system. So far the icomec is taking care of worms too. I have heard raw pumkin seeds also expel worms never tried it but ya never know. I wish I had taken a picture of her when we got her to show a before and after. But I am computer stupid and don't know how to download pics to computer from my camera.I also use the neem for excema in my soaps I make.Hubby uses it for skeeter repellant. My cousin is a vet and I have consulted with her on this.

Get to a vet. The smell is probably from them scratching and an infection has started. My puppy had mange and she smelled horrible! Lot of hair loss too. Vet put her on medication for the mange and also antibiotics. I know it can be expensive but for them to get better they need to be seen.

Change dog foods. Many companies do not hold to any RDA for dogs. Stick a multi-vitamin in a piece of cheese or hot dog. Many skin "disorders" are a dietary deficiency. A doctor or Vet will not normally tell you this as they get money from repeat visitations. (10/29/2006)

I found out that giving the dog benedyrl keeps them from scratching. Also, I take hydrocortisone 1% cream and rub on the sores and them I take nesoporin ointment and rub on top of the other cream and it seem to heal my boxer. (10/30/2006)

RE: Dog Mange Remedies
I adopted a dog that someone threw out that had mange. I bought liquid castille soap and added some tea tree oil to it. It didn't cost too much, soothed the dog's skin, and got rid of the mange. You have to be extra careful not to get it the dog's eyes. I also used this on another dog that had hot spots and a third that had allergies. I was always surprised at how the animals would stand still for me to rub it in when I was shampooing them. They seemed to hate other treatments that I tried. Anyway, my point is that it works for a multitude of things, is cheap, and can be kept forever until it's used up.
PS: This works great for people with dandruff too. (07/06/2006)

Warning About Petroleum Based Products
Just a quick heads up about using petroleum-based products (like the motor oil suggestion and also things like dish soap) can cause liver failure in domestic animals - so if your dog is a "licker" - might want to bypass that one. (07/20/2006)

RE: Dog Mange Remedies
Take the dog to the vet. Mange is from dirty conditions and gets really bad. Can get in the eyes and all. Needs ivermection from the vet. If not taken care of will need IV treatment. VET (10/16/2006)

Our dog Ginger, a yellow Lab, has developed somthing that looks like mange at the base of her tail and small spots in the surrounding area. She itches like crazy at times and bites at it. Her hair in that area has fallen out just this week exposing spots of skin. Fred, a black Lab and her partner in life does not seem to be affected at all by what she has deveploped even though they share the same dog house and play together. What home remedies can I try before having to go to the vet as my income is very limited?
