This is interesting, of course I had to do the test. Our dryer is 25 yrs old and has had the heating element changed out about 6 yrs ago. Prior to that time I had used dryer sheets exclusively. During that same time period I switched over to liquid fabric softener (use it in the Downy ball) just because I preferred the softness it provided vs. the dryer sheets. I've used nothing else since then. Well - now for the test results. The water ran right thru the filter material, so I'm guessing liquid softener doesn't build up the film you're talking about.
