Trainers say that rather than regular carpet cleaners, you need to use a product from the pet stores specifically for cleaning up accidents. Apparently they contain special enzymes that destroy the odor (to the extent that even dogs can't smell it). As long as your pup can smell pee on the carpet, that signals to him this is an okay place to pee.

Personally, if mine couldn't be trusted on the carpet, I'd keep him only in the areas that have tile or linoleum. But, that's a matter of personal preference!
