Jack R's - Cocker Spaniels - there are lots of bigger breeds that are still very small in dogs size - we have a cocker spaniel too

and I never worry about her around kids - she knows when to get out of the way - and she's big enough at 27 lbs that I don't worry about her being stepped on or worse - fallen on and small enough that she'd do well in an apartment if I lived in one.
