I had a German Shepard female, not altered, when I was a kid. I come from Poland and, 15 years ago, it wasn't popular to have pets fixed. You just dealt with the hormones, my friend had 2 small dog - boy and girl, littermates, and she had to go to extremes (like having her boy stay at a relative's house whenever the girl went into heat). Plus spotting, I admit it wasn't easy to keep the house clean with my big female LOL... And we never bred her, anyway. She did run away a few times while in heat but didn't allow any dogs close, now I know it was pretty irresponsible but that's how we did it back then... Still, when I told my mom I want Pepper neutered she was like 'You want what??!!', I guess it's still not popular
