As far as tails - makes sure you do the dew claws at the same time too. Some vets forget to do this for some reason. The tails usually require 1 or 2 stitches, but the dew claws just one snip, no stitches, no problem. There is a way done with clamping hemostats and then just twisting that is suppose to require no stitches, but my vet won't do it he says it leaves hairless tails (but there are many breeders on here that swear by it). My vet pulls the skin back (so he has extra skin to stitch up) then snips with scissors.
My vet lets them go home immediately. Mom and I wait outside (in the parking lot) and my husband goes in with the puppies and it's all done in less than 10 minutes. Take Mom with you and if your vet insists on keeping them, insist Mom stays too. They will be comforted by nursing and Mom will be happier not worrying about where they are. All of mine have yelped when cut, but never seemed to be in any pain after that moment. Good luck!
So happy to see that Trini has gotten that sparkle back in her eyes. |
