Welcome! If you do your search right and get a pup froma reputable breeder your vet costs will not be high at all. Maybe two visits a year and like $80 for a puppy package that include the necessary shots. Why are females higher? Well there is a higher demand for females because to many the are $$$$$ signs, other like the dresses accesories and fun stuff that go along with them and with reputable breeders they are harder to come across as they usually are kept for their show/breeding programs. Many people do argue that males are more laid back and make better pets, I wouldn't as I have a female, but breeders say female usually run their own program , if you know what I mean.
