I think it is the ending that is important -- something like, no matter what horrible things go on, you will always take care of your little ones. Probably means nothing like you and your husband really harming them -- instead -- life itself being a danger and in the end you will be there to take care of them! AT least that is what I would infer -- consider it a Psyche 101 interpretation.
