Both my dogs wear collars - and I have never had any problems with them. They pull at the line as puppies and it is easier for me to control how hard I yank to teach them not to pull with a collar I think.
I have however thought of a harness, but haven't found one I really liked. But that would be mostly for the looks and not until the little new one is done with leash training.
