I prefer AVID back in the day, but w/ some many new companies out there and readers, I think it's just important to get them implanted.
I've recovered two Akitas that have gotten on the wrong international flights pretty much SOLEY because of the microchip(s)!
Every animal I now have has one. I used to have two ferrets-and you guessed it-THEY even had AVID chips inserted!
