I have had both male and female dogs and cats over the years. My present furbabies are 1 male cat, 1 female cat and 2 female dogs. I have never seen a difference in the animals based on their gender, I think it is more a personality thing. I have had equally loving males and females. Both of my cats are very loving but my male is more selective about who he is going to grace with his affection, while my female cat loves everybody.
My older female dog (4 years old) is a total love bug and never leaves my side. My baby (female 4.5 months old) is affectionate, but not nearly as affectionate as my 4 year old female dog. The baby is always toooooooo busy to stop and give affection. She is like the energizer bunny--go, go, go! However once she finally tires out, she loves to give kisses and cuddle.
I think animals are like people, they all have their unique personalities. From my experience, gender has nothing to do with it, this has been true for both my dogs and cats.
