About your question with feeding, I think everyone here does it different.
I know I free feed Venus in the daytime. I take her food up at 7pm, and hope this keeps her from having to poo at night. When I started doing that, she'd been pooing in her crate! I keep her water down though, and never picked it up.
She's no longer crated at night, she sleeps on the bed with me and my older yorkie. After the first time she crawled up those doggie steps, and made it on the bed, she was so proud that she got on the "big bed", I didn't have the heart to keep crating her beside the bed at night anymroe.
Some feed on a schedule, some take food up at a certain hour, and some free feed day and night.
