Interesting thread, as a groomer for lots of years I see this happen all to often, and each case is different. Some dogs adjust well and some do not. Just like people some dogs love and need their friends more than others.
I have had clients that loose one dog and then the other dies too it is just very sad. Sometimes the owner tells of a new personality in the dog left behind that they never noticed before. Some times the dogs I groom will even act different when they come to see me. I can tell if something bad is going on in the household.

Sometimes the owner is the one that dies and the dogs are lost then too.
Death is hard to deal with no matter who or what it happens too. So hug your babies tonight while you still have them, they are a gift.
