Try taking his food away again, and if he growls or tries to bite you lay him flat on his back and say no in a very stern voice. That is one way you can show him who is alpha, because thats what dogs do in the wild. Do this a few times a day and hopefully a few stern NO!'s and some time outs will correct this new behavior. Don't worry he's still the loveable kissable baby you have, he's just acting on his instincts as an animal. As long as you don't put up with it, he will not continue it.
This is EXACTLY what I was going to suggest. When he does it again, flip him on his back right then and tell him NO in a very stern voice. You need to show him that YOU are the alpha dog, not him. Then get some kibbles in your hand and make him eat out of your hand. Then pick up the bowl for a few minutes but set it back down. Show him that you are not the enemy and that you are not trying to take his food away.
