Yes, I do use a protective gloss. It is a clear high gloss finish.
If you plan on painting your lightplates again, it is a good idea to use a protective paint for sure.
A high gloss finish leaves a nice look and allows you to wash it.
My suggestion would be to lightly spray the first coat.
Then lightly spray again a second coat.
And the 3rd coat should be lightly sprayed as well.
(Evenly)
Drying time between them should be at least a day for it to set in.

P.S....unfortunately, I cannot recommend a particular product, as I am supplied with a product from a supplier, because of the high volume of plates that I make. But, try looking for something that says Clear high Gloss finish.
