I think it's good for him to be ABLE to be alone without you.. like a baby needs to feel safe away from their mom. This is probably a good thing in the long run for both of you. A few hours isn't a long time... and when you leave, he'll probably cry for a while, give up, and sleep. Good luck. Part of any companionship is times together and times apart.
