You must have very good quality and very healthy lines to inbreed several generations back and even then it is too risky in my opinion. Many health problems have to be on both the mother and the father's side to become reality in a puppy. That is why two healthy parents can produce a genetic health problem that neither has. If you breed two dogs from the same line then you have the same genetic health problems in both and have a very good chance of the problems appearing in the puppies. I once read inbreeding described as "not for the faint of heart" and I agree you can have some horrible birth defects materialize.
It is true that all purebreds are inbred simply for the fact that way back in the line they originated from the same dogs (just as humans with Adam and Eve).
Inbreeding is when you breed a father/daughter, uncle/niece, grandfather/granddaughter, 2nd cousins, etc. - what we call incest in humans. It becomes line breeding when they are less close in relation, but many breeders draw this line at different places. |
