SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Former CIA Director Robert Gates is set to become the new secretary of defense, according to media reports Wednesday. Gates will replace Donald Rumsfeld, who is planning to resign after six years as defense secretary, the Associated Press reported, citing Republican officials. Gates served as CIA director from November of 1991 until January of 1993, under President George H.W. Bush.
