I have always been told to limit the breeding time span to decrease the chance of premature puppies also. I only breed once, rest a day, and then breed one more time and I always have four puppies (a full house for a small female) so I don't think you have to breed many times to produce a good quantity of pups.
Have never been in the situation you are in. I don't think anyone can give you a definite answer, this is one that only hindsight is going to let you know. You might be right in the first mating being a pushy male, but if she seemed receptive then you are probably fine not breeding again. I think I would probably breed once more just to be safe.
Don't know off hand the exact number of days ovum are viable, but I do know that all the eggs are not released at the same time so I do believe in the premature theory. I definitely do not believe in the let them do it as many times as they want approach. |
