Default Working and trying to potty train??

My pup's a little more than 5 months now... And I'm starting to realize I haven't been really successful potty training him . As long as he's enclosed in the kitchen he sticks to pee pad. But once Pepper sneaked thru the gate to the bathroom and left 'little suvenirs' there. Then, a few days ago, out of the blue, he peed and pooped in the bedroom (where he had been allowed to roam accident-free for the past month or so. Is he regressing?? I take him outside and he refuses to go potty there, I even took his peepad and wiped the pee side around in the grass to leave his scent, doesn't seem to work. The problem is I work and can't take him with too often. I know he's not able to hold too long but hubby gets home 5 hours after I leave, is that ok to expect him to hold that long? And how would I do that?? I'm clueless , pls any advice... I only had a big dog growing up and pottytraining was a breeze, she seemed to have an iron bladder...
