I wouldn't let him play with big, rough dogs. You don't have to pull him from the class, but if he's being traumatized, keep him separate. Let him slowly decide which dogs he wants to investigate.

But long as he's safe, don't baby him if he cowers from other dogs. Tell him it's OK and encourage him to say hi. You want to protect him, but you don't want to reinforce his skittish behavior. It can be a fine line to walk sometimes.
