The steps come stacked inside one another...you just take them apart and screw them together. Screws are provided. They are made of wood with carpet covering...too bad there aren't more colors I am considering getting a set, with the fourth step, for my bed. I was a little sceptical at first, because they were so cheap. The only thing I don't like about them is the steps are really small. But, so is she. If they were any bigger, they would take up a whole lot of room. You can see from the pic they are small..Bella is 3lbs.
