I wish there was a secret because I sure could use it on my Yorkie! *lol* Tuffy's (my male) breeder had started him on newspaper and that's what I had him on for the first few days before moving to pee pads.. he just caught on really fast, he's incredibly smart. I didn't have to use a crate or anything.. first night home I just picked him up and set him down on the papers and he went and from then on he'd always go back to that spot. I've tried doing the same with my Yorkie because her breeder also started her on pee pads but she just isn't picking it up. She does fine when she's alone in her little room but as soon as she gets let out she'll run right onto the carpet to piddle.
It really just depends on the dog.. I think Tuffy was very eager to please me and is so smart that he just picked up immediately. Pixie is very stubborn and even though she's smart too she chooses not to go in the right place just because she can. *lol*
