Microchip Reunites Pet Owners With 'Scruffy' Dog

(CBS 11 News) FORT WORTH It was nearly eight years ago when a Yorkshire Terrier, named ‘Scruffy’, ran away from his home in Kansas. His owners had given up hope of ever finding him until they got a call from the Fort Worth Animal Shelter.
"They were just ecstatic to know the dog was here and alive and they were anxious to come get it," said Carla Strickand, a veterinary technician at the shelter.
‘Scruffy’ was found roaming the streets of Fort Worth and was taken to the shelter, where he was scanned for microchip ID. The chip, which is as thin as a toothpick and about 1/8th the length, was inserted under his skin years ago.
Information on the chip led to Scruffy's owners who now live in Kentucky.
"Stories like this we would like to have more of and we really encourage residents to take advantage of the opportunity to have dogs micro chipped," said Hilda Zuniga, a spokesperson for the City of Fort Worth Public Health Department.
No one knows where ‘Scruffy’ has been over the years, but it appears someone has been taking care of him. "He's very well, fed," Strickland says with a laugh, as she lightly squeezes the dogs’ belly.
Scruffy's owners are excited to see the dog but are still trying to figure out how to get him back. It's a 14-hour drive from Kentucky and they're having trouble fitting it into their schedule.
Scruffy will stay at the shelter until the owners can figure out a solution.
