Personally I would never give pick of the litter unless the contract stated that a litter is more than one live healthy pup.

I feel it very unfair for the owner of the female to have to give up the only puppy when all the risk was on the female. Then they have to wait a year before breeding again, where the stud can be out making money every omnth.

That is just my opinion, I have never studded one out, nor have I had to use a stud. I just know I would not give up my only puppy when my female is the one that had all the risk and expense.

I believe I would insist on two or more live puppies, (all the breeding books that I have read say one pup is not consiodered a litter) and a restud for one or none. But at the very most, I would split the price of a single pup.
