Our terrier mix that we lost in January used to have this problem all the time! When her hair would start getting too long, she'd get 'blocked up' and we'd have to give her behind a good cleaning. Haven't yet had this problem with Topher but we've been going to the groomers regularly so I guess that's been keeping things okay. I don't envy you the mess...I remember what that was like.
