Both my males were neutered at 6 mos., as per my vet's advice. But it wasn't a moment too soon, since they both started 'marking' about a week before their 6 month birthday. Since neutering, neither has lifted their leg in the house.
I use Heartguard Plus for heartworm. It's given once a month.
