 Had the same problem
Max is also "cottony".....and he easily mats......
I tried may different detanglers....helped some but did not work on the big mats.....
I went to Petsmart and bought a detangler tool called Matbreaker.......I was able to gently remove even the largest mat a little piece at a time.
It is a wonderful tool for "cottony" coats.
