Yesterday practically the same thing happened to me. I was taking my two 8 year-old granddaughters out for the day and they wanted to go to an outdoor mall near me. There happened to be a Petland there so we went in. Of course they HAD to have a little female Yorkie pup there and the girls (and Nana) wanted to hold her. We took her in one of those little rooms to play with her. She was a little doll although she was only 8 weeks old. I asked one of the employees of the store how long the Yorkie had been there and she said the Yorkie had been there a week! I asked her how in good conscience could they take a puppy away from it's mother at 7 weeks of age! She looked at me like I had 2 heads or something!! Her response was "6 to 8 weeks of age is the normal age to do that."
After playing with the dog for awhile the same employee came back to check up on us and give us the "sell job" on the dog. She said the dog was $1695 dollars but she came with a microchip! I was just floored. I asked her how could they charge $1700 for a petstore quality dog and she said that Yorkies were very expensive and perhaps she had "champions" somewhere in her bloodlines. I let out a laugh and I got the "skunk eye" from her and she walked away.
When my granddaughters FINALLY put her down I noticed that she was favoring one of her back legs. It was very obvious that something was wrong. I called the employee back over and told her. You won't BELIEVE what her response was..."Well, she's been held a lot today and she's tired. I need to take her back now so she can get some rest." I told the dingaling that there was something wrong with the dog and she needed a vet, NOT REST!!! I wanted to scoop her up and run as fast as I could to save the poor thing.
HOW DO WE STOP THINGS LIKE THIS FROM HAPPENING? Some poor, unsuspecting person is going to buy that little angel girl and pay a ridiculous amount of money for an injured (and God knows what else) dog. I know we can't save them all but we also can't give these large petstore chains absorbanent amounts of money for our dogs either. If only we could educate people. I know that all petstores aren't bad. We've certainly proved that on this site but places like Petland need to be shut down. All they care about is making money off of people who haven't done their homework. Most of their sales are from impulse buyers. I know because I make a few "impulse" purchases myself!!
Thanks for letting me rant......Now I'm going to go get some wonderful Yorkie kisses from Muffin to calm me down.
