That is a shame. I have always loved animals and treated them very special. My family knows I love my furbabies and that I spoil them and treat them like my kids. While they would not probably do the same with their dog and spoil them and treat them like babies they accept that do with mine. Of course the cuteness factor helps!!
My grandparents were anti-dog until I got my cocker and they love her. Now they love my smaller furbabies too and love seeing all the clothes, bows, etc that they have and want to baby them too!!
