"I use a flexi attached to Joey's harness when we are in a large area where I am happy for him to run around. Now that he knows "heel", I attach a regular leash to his collar when I want him to stay close. He seems to be able to differentiate between the 2 types of walking without a problem."

That's the same w/ our training collars. If you want your dog to pull you, put on a thick collar or a harness. Otherwise if the leash is attached to your prong collar or slip collar then that's a no go! It's the same concept we use for our K9's. If you're tracking, it's one collar and if it's bitework it's another.
