Reupholstering is usually pretty expensive, at least when I have checked on the prices - I have found it is cheaper to buy something new than have it redone.

My daughter did her own - but it was not the typical couch - it had separate cushions for both the seat and the back and then the rest of the couch was wood - the frame was all wood. You can easily cover the seats cushions (if they are loose) by just stretching the fabric over the existing fabric and using LARGE safety pins on the underside to keep it in place. I know this sounds wierd and it did to me too - but she did this to our old couch 10 years ago and it still looks GREAT! Of course, you cannot flip the cushions over - so that is a downside.

I don't imagine the couch you have is like ours - and I don't have any advice for a typical couch.
