I also saw on the dog whisperer that sometimes when the dog is barking they are barking to warn you or such. Reagan, our Yorkie, barks at the door all the time, we also have a cat door that she constantly thinks someone/thing is at. He said that the dog is alerting you and when you try and hush the dog it intensifies the situation and rather than correcting you dog at times such as this to reward them and try to calm them down and let them know its ok and that they did the right thing. We do this with Reagan when she is barking at something we think she is telling us about and she quits barking pretty quick. I usually go see what she's barking at to let her know that I get her point and tell her good and its ok. One day I may be glad she told/warned me. But if she's just barking to be barking, or barking at us to play or something like that, we don't reward her then we tell her no.
