 How I Clean Ears
I clean my boys ears once per week.
I place them on the counter top on a regular size bathmat for security. It is much better if you can have someone help you. Have the other person hold the snout while you lift up and gently pull the ear straight up to lengthen the canal.
Have your cleaning solution ( I use Malacetic Otic or Epi-Otic) ready to go, and slowly fill the canal with the solution (or you can start with 5-8 drops), then gently, but firmly rub the base of the back of the ear. You should hear the solution making noise. Rub for 30-60 seconds (longer, if your baby tolerates it),
then teach your love muffin to shake his/her head ( We say, "Shake 'em up!".
The excess liquid comes out of the ear. Take a cotton ball and then clean the outside of the ear and along the ridges. You may take a second cotton ball, rub it vigorously in your hands to make it long and thin, and then gently enter the canal (only a little bit) to dry it.
It took a few times, but now the boys love it! Their Daddy does the rubbing!
We just went to the Vet today, and all ears were in perfect condition!
I also pluck the ear hair once per week, using ear powder and slant-tip tweezers.
We stopped going to the groomer last May, when it took 8 hours for the angels to be done, and Spencer came home with an ulcerated cornea.
Remember, really sticky ears mean infection, and dark or black discharge means mites. If you are not satisfied after cleaning them, take your angel to the vet.
