My Spitz was fully housetrained and Sugar, Shih-Tzu only took 3 weeks to train. I never had a puppy until now (Siu Pao the Yorkie). It is really up to you. I myself find it easier to have a grown up dog because you only have to fine tune their behaviour whereas a puppy, you have to fine tune them for at least a year. My next dog will definitely be a senior dog or an older adult from the shelter.
