I rubbed it into the matt but then rubbed it in everywhere to get the excess off my hands... and as someone else said... at first I too was like... woah!!!! This stuff is like rubbing LARD into her coat! WAY too oily! but in a matter of minutes it soaked in to the hair shafts and was GONE! and the hair was silky and soft! and the mats melted out! it was so cool! I'm doing paris tonight... She mats when the wind blows... so I'll be dipping her in it! lol I'm going to try the spray bottle with water like somebody said??? see how that works?? I forget who said to do that??? see of the force of the spray gets it deeper into the mat?? or if applying it direct is really the best way to go....
If anyone has experiance on this one and can say one way or the other... please do!!! I'll check back before I do it!
