Okay, I don't know about the nail thing. Your best bet would be to clip the nails and see if that helps. I let my dogs eat as much as they want in a day. I just leave food out at all times.
For the red in the stool. I would check next time he goes and if there is red in it again I would take a sample in to the vet. He may be sick and that might be why he is acting depressed.
