I would actually sprinkle it on the carpet, use a broom to rub it down into the fibers, and then leave it on there at LEAST a day. It works by drying them out (basically!) The only problem I ever had was sometimes it would dry our feet out if we walked around barefoot.

IMO it's fine to use around the animals! Esp. if you rub it in so that they aren't kicking up a cloud and inhaling it.
