I don't mean to sound like a pessimist, but I know you would hate to harm the momma, so I would definitely take her to the vet, preferably one with an ultrasound. Yes, she could have other pups in there, but you need to make sure they are still alive. An xray would only confirm their presence. If there is something going on in there, she could get a horrible infection. The vet could also listen for the heartbeats if xray is your only option. But please get her to a vet. Let us know how she's doing and good luck to both of you.
